ROBYN’S TRAINING COPY APRIL22012 update <== Oh boy! Lot’s of changes…anything in pink is new. It may be an old date (expired) for supplemental training, but it was never listed on the spreadsheet. All CM’s supplemental training will stay white, but all ASM’s supplemental will either be green, yellow or red.

Climbing Merit Badge Requirements

These will be on Mondays April 16 and April 23 from 6:00 to 6:45 PM at St Lukes, Room 2.

The merit badge requirements are shown below – and the workbook is available at http://www.scoutorama.com/merit_badge/mb_display.cfm?mb_id=28
Note: On this site, the workbooks have the current Merit Badge Requirements revised in 2011.

Many of you have already completed items #3, #8 and #10 and parts of #7 at the Climbing Lock-ins, some of you have completed #9 if you were a belayer.

Merit Badge Requirements are as follows:
1. Do the following:
a. Explain to your counselor the most likely hazards you may encounter while participating in climbing activities, and what you should do to anticipate, help prevent, mitigate, and respond to these hazards.
b. Show that you know first aid for and how to prevent injuries or illnesses that could occur during climbing activities, including heat and cold reactions, dehydration, stopped breathing, sprains, abrasions, fractures, rope burns, blisters, snakebite, and insect bites or stings.
c. Identify the conditions that must exist before performing CPR on a person.
2. Learn the Leave No Trace principles and Outdoor Code, and explain what they mean.

3. Present yourself properly dressed for belaying, climbing, and rappelling (i.e., appropriate clothing, footwear, and a helmet; rappellers can also wear gloves).

4. Location. Do the following:
a. Explain how the difficulty of climbs is classified, and apply classifications to the rock faces or walls where you will demonstrate your climbing skills.
b. Explain the following: top-rope climbing, lead climbing, and bouldering.
c. Evaluate the safety of a particular climbing area. Consider weather, visibility, the condition of the climbing surface, and any other environmental hazards.
d. Determine how to summon aid to the climbing area in case of an emergency.

5. Verbal signals. Explain the importance of using verbal signals during every climb and rappel, and while bouldering. With the help of the merit badge counselor or another Scout, demonstrate the verbal signals used by each of the following:
a. Climbers
b. Rappellers
c. Belayers
d. Boulderers and their spotters

6. Rope. Do the following:
a. Describe the kinds of rope acceptable for use in climbing and rappelling.
b. Show how to examine a rope for signs of wear or damage.
c. Discuss ways to prevent a rope from being damaged.
d. Explain when and how a rope should be retired.
e. Properly coil a rope.

7. Knots. Demonstrate the ability to tie each of the following knots. Give at least one example of how each knot is used in belaying, climbing, or rappelling.
a. Figure eight on a bight
b. Figure eight follow-through
c. Water knot
d. Double fisherman’s knot (grapevine knot)
e. Safety knot

8. Harnesses. Correctly put on at least ONE of the following:
a. Commercially made climbing harness
b. Tied harness
9. Belaying. Do the following:
a. Explain the importance of belaying climbers and rappellers and when it is necessary.
b. Belay three different climbers ascending a rock face or climbing wall.
c. Belay three different rappellers descending a rock face or climbing wall using a top rope.

10. Climbing. Do the following:
a. Show the correct way to tie into a belay rope.
b. Climb at least three different routes on a rock face or climbing wall, demonstrating good technique and using verbal signals with a belayer.

11. Rappelling. Do the following:
a. Using a carabiner and a rappel device, secure your climbing harness to a rappel rope.
b. Tie into a belay rope set up to protect rappellers.
c. Rappel down three different rock faces or three rappel routes on a climbing wall. Use verbal signals to communicate with a belayer, and demonstrate good rappelling technique.

12. Demonstrate ways to store rope, hardware, and other gear used for climbing, rappelling, and belaying

Here is the meeting plan for the next meeting:

1930 – Patrol Meeting Time

- Get accquainted with new patrol and discuss patrol name, flag, yell, etc.

2000 - KICKBALL!!! (Adults vs Scouts)

2030 – Closing/Dismissal

Old Patrol Leaders: Remember you are still in term until this meeting so you need to be the ones that call your patrols, not the newly elected leaders! The same thing applies to the old OTLs as well!

PLs, please call your patrols and remind them that this is at YORKMINISTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH not St. Luke’s. Also, if someone could bring a kickball and bases please let me know.

Please remind your patrols about the Mulching project at St Luke’s, which is this Saturday (March 31st). Also they need to bring tools (i.e. gloves, eye protection, gas blowers, rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, etc.) which are listed on the email that was sent out earlier about the mulching project.

Also, PLs remember to bring your paper and your leadership handbook to the meeting.

Hey guys just making sure I know how to work all this fancy newfangled inter-webs stuff. No but seriously though, this is just to make sure I know what I’m doing and so that I don’t go and crash anybody’s computer. Cuz that would look bad for me, and I don’t want that. Hopefully that doesn’t happen, and I’ll try my best to get the stuff up in a timely manner. Out.

This will be the last meeting plan I post. It’s bern a good term!

Here is the meeting plan for the Monday the 19th. Also ,everybody will be doing Patrol elections Monday along with having guest speakers. Call your patrol leaders to tell them about the elections and other open spots in the patrol and to pass the word to the other scouts in the patrols. Bryan, call the scoutmaster conferences and board of reviews. Also, whoever has the Leprechauns as their patrol, remind them there are doing flags. (I don’t remember at this time who has them.)

Next meeting is election night! The whole meeting will consist of elections. Everyone needs to be there! So, PLs, please call all of your patrols and remind them that they need to show up to this meeting. We need a good turnout to accurately elect our next leaders. Here is the meeting plan:

Hello there everyone! It has been my pleasure to serve this leadership term as your Troop 200 webmaster, and I had a lot of fun with it! However, my term will be ending soon, and I will need to have a replacement (I cant run a second term, because I’ll be (sadly) leaving this summer.) If you are interested in being the Troop 200 webmaster, please send me an email at webmaster@troop200.net stating that you would like to be the new webmaster so that I can get a basic idea of interest in the position.

Just a few quick factoids about being webmaster:

You will need to check e-mail A LOT. I’m not kidding.
Most of the main website is maintained by Mr. Harvey, but it is your responsibility to have the uniform updated every week for the upcoming meeting.
You have full access to do what ever you want to the Scout Scoop. Be creative and do something awesome!
It’s a lot of fun, but at the same time, you ar
e the Troop’s main messenger, and you have to get the message out.
Advanced computer skills are required, and a basic knowledge of HTML helps, too.

It’s been a pleasure serving you as webmaster!
